Harris Academy Sutton has won the Building Performance Award at the Building Awards.

Working with Willmott Dixon Construction, DES carried out the Electrical design, installation, and delivery of the first Passivhaus Trust Secondary School in the UK.

Sutton Council’s ambition was to create a school that went above and beyond the general requirements of a school, thinking outside the box of achieving a school that had minimal operational carbon, certainty of energy savings whilst surpassing the requirements for the indoor educational spaces.

My opting for Passivhaus status instead of the BREEAM that are widely associated with the education sector means that the Secondary School can offer energy consumption that is typically 80% lower than a standard new building.

It is great for the school to be recognised for its outstanding sustainability credentials. There are 1,000+ projects that are Passivhaus recognised within the UK but only 1 Secondary School – this being Harris Academy Sutton.
